For those who love hand made lace.
Please give me advice if it is handmade(possible mechlin?) bobbin lace or not. Thank you. Tomoko
Albums: Christianing gown (Brussels)
Thank you very much. I had tried to find as much information on internet. First I thought it valencienne. But after reading through about valencienne, I was sure it was not. Then checked through bobbin lace and found out it might be mechlin. The picot was so tiny still it had clear round shape, so I thought it should be hand made.
I will take photo with darker background and upload again.
Here you can clearly see the weaver going through the dense cloth stitch area, making the picot on the edge, and returning back into the lace.
My only suggestion is that next photo the lace against a midtone or darer background. It will be easier to see.
Where the green lines are you can follow threads as they go though the dense cloth stitch area. The blue circle shows the Mechlin ground. ctctctct I should add that Mechlin is a straight lace. Brussels is a part lace and usually has raised work.

I got this christianing gown at an antique lace shop in Brussels. The shop owner said that the lace was handmade. But at that time, I could not determine if it really was but felt even machine made...just beautiful.
When I came back to Japan, I wondered if it was hand made or not. My eyesight is not well enough. So I took photos, and trimmed to make the details more visible.
