BOOKS OF GROUNDS

Uta Ulrich GRUENDE MIT SYSTEM, Verlag Barbara Fay, 2009. 448 grounds

Ulrike Voelker VIELE GUTE GRUENDE i, II, III, IV

Bridget Cook & Geraldine Stott BOOK OF BOBBIN LACE STITCHES, Branford, Watertown Mass. 1980. 262 pages.  A great variety, but omits some continental grounds.

Cook & Stott INTRODUCTION TO BOBBIN LACE STITCHES. Batsford, London, 1983. 86 pages.  Adds some continental grounds omitted in the 1st book.  I would call these the most basic ground.

Christine Hawken  121 HONITON FILLINGS  "121 HONITON FILLINGS: this a a good book for the experienced Honiton lacemaker who wants ideas for fillings.  Each filling is well graphed and diagramed.  The only drawback is that the pictures of the fillings are not of the best quality.  But that is understandable since the book was published in 1997." review by Cathy Kozlowski, IOLI LIbrarian       IOLI B-298 121 Honiton Fillings

The first time I heard about this chaos ground was from the Czech teacher Martina Stefkova and she told us her mother (the very well known Czech designer Jana) invented it. But then I bought an Hungarian lace book (Hunnia lace), and it happens that there are a lot of variations of this stitch in it. The German Lacers are also very fond of including it in their new designs. So... who was first? No idea! But there are many variations of this stitch, combining half and cloth stitches. Antje Glez.

A year or 2 ago Ilske posted this on arachne, but it was in a discussion about "chaos stitch".  I don't know if that is the same as "wild ground".

"But the one, I interprete WS as whole stich, you change in each row:

HS  WS  HS  WS
WS  HS  WS  HS
HS  WS  HS  WS

without any pin. But you can also work HS P HS,  HS,  HS P HS,  HS this gives another picture but it lasted longer to work.
Or you work HS,  LS,  HS,  Ws,  LS,  HS or what ever
There are many possibilities."

There was a whole wave of "wild ground" a few years ago and I never quite got it.  I would love to know how to approach it.  I know there were some classes and perhaps a book about it.  But I never managed to find them.

These were sort of regularly irregular grounds, perhaps layered.  Northern European.  But I lost track.

Vladka Cepakova is using isometric graph paper as the pattern for tape lace:
