BOOKS OF GROUNDS

Uta Ulrich GRUENDE MIT SYSTEM, Verlag Barbara Fay, 2009. 448 grounds

Ulrike Voelker VIELE GUTE GRUENDE i, II, III, IV

Bridget Cook & Geraldine Stott BOOK OF BOBBIN LACE STITCHES, Branford, Watertown Mass. 1980. 262 pages.  A great variety, but omits some continental grounds.

Cook & Stott INTRODUCTION TO BOBBIN LACE STITCHES. Batsford, London, 1983. 86 pages.  Adds some continental grounds omitted in the 1st book.  I would call these the most basic ground.

Christine Hawken  121 HONITON FILLINGS  "121 HONITON FILLINGS: this a a good book for the experienced Honiton lacemaker who wants ideas for fillings.  Each filling is well graphed and diagramed.  The only drawback is that the pictures of the fillings are not of the best quality.  But that is understandable since the book was published in 1997." review by Cathy Kozlowski, IOLI LIbrarian       IOLI B-298 121 Honiton Fillings

I did post one set, but it is limited.

As far as I know it is the only one we have so far.  I do have some others somewhere.  I'll look.

Is there a place on this website where it is possible to print out several ground prickings, also where they can be done at different percentages. I know i have seen it before, I do realize that you would need the software for this, but as far as i know it may be here somewhere.

Well, my husband bought me on in L.A. that was 22" x 44" and gorgeous - lost it someplace between Ash Wednesday mass and home - Ahhhh!  But I had already measured it, thank God. I can't decide if I should make it as one large piece or do an edge and center separately   I have made a large bolster that is about 25" long and has a circumference of about 45" so could probably do it all on that bolster - but don't want to use a table runner pattern!! ha ha! (though I have been tempted)

Danette: a tape lace veil would be very nice. You could make it as coarse or fine as you wish, and the work wouldn't take forever. Nor would it use lots of bobbins. What would be your outside dimensions. Do you have a design in mind?

I would simply love to be able to design a piece of tape lace.  I want to make my own Mantilla (chapel veil) and I think that a tape lace would be beautiful.

You can always design a 2nd one and post it here.  If you are willing to let the world have the pattern for free.  We have an album of free patterns.  Some are from books with expired copyrights, but some are drawn by our members.

I'm working on one right now for the 2013 contest.  The theme really tickled my creativity.  I hate that I can only submit one.

I just received the IOLI Bulletin and have to compliment Janice Blair and Barbara Saltern on winning prizes in the lace contest for their beautiful original designs! How about all of you original designers submitting one of your designs to the Bulletin so we can see what you are doing?

I've always been really into doing art but I'm now a chemistry PhD student and have no time or space to fit painting into my life... I've been doing lace since about february and it's a great substitute (it certainly takes up less space, for now), but I've only used other people's patterns a couple of times. I love the creative process and why should it be different using bobbins rather than brushes?! Being a beginner can help I think because I'm not limited in my head by what I think lace should be able to do, I fit the technique to my own ideas.

To me, designing something different is a lot like doodling. All I need is a pencil and some graph paper.

Looking through magazines and old pictures often turn up something not seen for a long time. Then comes the challenge of recreating it.

Mixing stitches from different laces can also lead to something a little different.

Needless to say, these mixed patterns could not be used for a proficiency!!
