You are invited to visit our website at internationalorganizationoflace.org and click on Lace Challenge in the right column to find the instructions for the challenges. Then click on the drop down menu in the upper right corner or on the titles of the lace challenges to go to the pages where the challenge entries are displayed.
IOLI members – all ages & skill levels – are invited to participate in Challenge 2: Lace Biscornu. According to Wikipedia, the name biscornu is derived from the French adjective meaning skewed, quirky or irregular. You can choose to make this challenge as quick and simple or as elaborate as you want.
For this challenge, make two “squares” of lace – any pattern, any color(s), any fiber(s). Then stiffen the “squares”, bend, and sew them together to make a biscornu. 3” to 4” squares are recommended, not too small and not too large. The “squares” may have curved edges. You may knit, crochet, tat or make the “squares” in bobbin lace or needle lace. Assembly instructions are attached.
You may use a traditional lace pattern for the “squares”, or you may simply make a square using your favorite lace stitch pattern in your technique or try out stitch patterns you want to explore. A basic grid for bobbin lace is posted with the instrudtions.
When you complete your biscornu, send a picture to challenge@internationalorganizationoflace.org and I will post it on the Challenge 2 web page. Please include information about the pattern and fibers you chose since other people may want to use the pattern. On the Lace Challenge 2 web page, I have posted pictures of the lace biscornus that I have made so you can see some bobbin lace examples. I look forward to seeing your lace biscornus. Entries for this challenge will be accepted until May 31, 2021.
Reminder: Entries will be accepted for Lace Challenge 1: Inspired by the Stash until December 31, 2020. Challenge 1 projects are to be completed by March 31, 2021.

The IOLI is looking for advice about our Lace Lectures series. We are interested in hearing from members and non-members about talks they might be interested in hearing and the most convenient times to hold the talks. Please fill out this survey so that we can schedule talks that are of interest to the lace community. #lacelectures, if you have not already done so using the link from the email sent to IOLI members or the link on the IOLI Facebook. Here is the link to the survey: https://forms.gle/tvZ5W72DdsX4mb8a9
Sally - Thanks for that information. An interesting idea.

The Headford Lace Project and The Space Between
The members of the Headford Lace Project in Ireland are bringing an almost forgotten lace heritage dating to the 18th century back into the light in innovative and exciting ways. Through historical research, skill teaching, walking tours and collaboration with artists in the areas of film, visual arts, theatre, classical and folk music they are fostering a pride of place and attracting visitors to Headford. This year they are presenting The Space Between, a contemporary lace exhibit curated by lace artist Fiona Harrington. The exhibit will bring together 32 artists working in several media and all featuring handmade lace. Norma Owens and Fiona Harrington have graciously agreed to talk about the project and the exhibit in an IOLI virtual event on Oct. 31 at 1 pm New York time (EDT).
If you aren't already a member, now is a great time to join IOLI for as little as $30 per year for a digital subscription. IOLI is planning a series of online events for members. The next event will be Sunday October 18 and is co-sponsored by IOLI and OIDFA-USA. A link to this virtual lecture will be sent the week before the talk.

I greatly enjoyed the article that you and Jane Atkinson authored in the most recent IOLI Bulletin. It was fascinating to hear about all the backstage issues involved in setting up a major exhibition. You now have a whole new set of skills.
Thank you all for your help. However, I have just phoned them, and a very helpful lady has got me booked in now. As we are staying a couple of extra nights, she has fixed it so we can stay in the same room, - not have to move to another one, which is good.
Now, to get the air fares booked, - and there is a Special on, I think that runs out tomorrow, - and which might save us about $400 each! So I was anxious to get the Hotel booked first. Must now get the car out and go to our Travel agent and get her to book our flights!!
