For those who love hand made lace.
Does anyone have any experience with one of the shawl patterns from Ulrike Voelcker's Torchon workbook? Specifically the prickings from the 10th chapter. The patterns call for Zürcher merino 30/2 lace weight yarn. I am trying to find something more economical and easily available that has a nice drape. I have experimented with DMC embroidery cotton in 2 ply and 3 ply and the fabric is too stiff.
I do not know what exactly "2-ply embroidery cotton" is and what kind of thread is easily available to you, I can just tell you, that the lace weight merino used on those patterns (enlarged to 150 % as stated) is about as thick as a Coats mercer crochet No 20 thread. That will not give you a nice drape and won't fill in as nicely, but that might be something you can use to compare.
There is a 4-ply Cotton a Broder from DMC in 20 thickness, that might do the trick, just als well as the DMC Perl Cotton No. 8.
I suggest you try to purchase a merino yarn specifically for Shetland lace. I use a 30/2 merino, bought in Australia, but I buy this in in a one kilo cone, which is more than you would need.
