How do you do inverted tatting in needle tatting?

I have taught myself to do the P pickup and 2 ds across the Picots and the edge looks right but the result does not look correct as the area between the picots and the edge does not look like the pictures. I have to pull the pickup thread tight or the edge result looks messy. The only instructions on the web are for 2 shuttle tatting for inverted tatting. Thanks for the help!  Cheers! RosemarySee More

I am trying to make Judith Connors tatted flowers. I can only find instructions on how to do inverted tatting for shuttle tatters. I have worked it out that the second row (picking up the picots and doing ds across the row of picots) has to be done all at the same time on the needle, using a crochet hook to bring the thread through the picot as a loop.

However, when I do it I have found that I must bring the loop up tightly to get the neat row of ds on top of the picots or it looks messy.

Yet as you can see in this picture there is some filling between the picots and the outer finished edge of the petal. I cannot figure out how to get that with needle tatting.

your help would be greatly appreciated. Judith Connors book is for shuttle tatters.

Cheers! Rosemary
