Honiton

Honiton bobbin lace is a very fine and delicate part lace.  Motifs are shaped by adding and removing threads as needed. It was based in Devonshire.  The early 18th century version was named Bath Brussels by Santina Levey.See More

Bobbin made tape laces (braid laces)

Varieties of this kind include Russian tape lace, Schneeberger lace, Idrija lace, Lepoglava, Hinojosa and Milanese.  These laces are popular today particularly in Italy, Spain, and Russia.  They go back to the mid 1500s in Italy and Flanders.  Milanese tape lace is more complex and adds fancy decorative stitches and holes into the tape itself.  Hinojosa, dating from at least the late 19th c through the 20th c, is from the south west of Spain and relies on changing the stitch used to allow the…See More

Sol Laces

The sol laces include Teneriffe and Nanduti.  They originated in the highly elaborate corners of drawn thread embroidery, but are now made on a network of threads laid down in a spoke pattern, as radii of a wheel.  Motifs are usually round but can be square or hexagonal.  Nanduti often has very unusual and complex shapes for its motifs.Nandhuti lace, Tenerife lace.See More

Point ground laces include Bucks point, Tonder, Bayeux, Chantilly, Blonde, Beveren and others that use the CTTT ground.  During the 19th century virtually every nation that had a bobbin lace making tradition produced some form of point ground lace.See More

Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire bobbin lace is a braid/plait based straight lace.  The designs usually involve a graceful clothwork trail that meanders through the design, and are usually curvilinear rather than geometric (except for the simplest ones).  The ground is usually a 4 strand plait/braid, often with picots.  The more complex designs often require threads to be constantly added and removed to achieve a good density.See More

Cantu

Cantu bobbin lace is a variety of tape lace, but uses a bundle to travel threads from one part of the design to another, a technique not used in other tape laces.  The designs often have curly flower heads with 3 lobes or petals.  Cantu lace. Also called punto Venezia.See More
