Thread substitute for Ulrike Voelcker Torchon Shawl pattern

Does anyone have any experience with one of the shawl patterns from Ulrike Voelcker's Torchon workbook?  Specifically the prickings from the 10th chapter.  The patterns call for Zürcher merino 30/2 lace weight yarn.  I am trying to find something more economical and easily available that has a nice drape. I have experimented with DMC embroidery cotton in 2 ply and 3 ply and the fabric is too stiff.Any suggestions? See More
