A knot I can't identify
5 Replies

I have learned a knot for use in outlining in pulled thread work, and don't know its name. I learned it from somebody's embroidery knot page, but whose? There are so many out there, plus all those…Continue

Patterns

I've come up with several. Most are too complicated for a first effort, but I've got one I think will do. Now to enlarge it to the right size and transfer it to the fabric. Lorelei mentions using a child's washable marker. I thought of using carpenter's chalk, but we don't have any. An artist friend says use a soft pencil. I'll work something out.See More

Making a real pattern

I have no doubt that I can do it. Just need to draw something up. Probably abstract floral based on Jacobean patterns.. Nothing too complicated. My brother the artist suggested a cityscape. I could do it on graph paper or maybe better yet on the iPad and print it. Then put the fabric over it and Trace it with some carpenter's chalk we have around (maybe --if not I will order some kind of marker). This looks like a fun project. Suggested by Lorelei.

"That's beautiful, along with the other pieces in your gallery. So far, as you see, I've been doing square or rectangular patches of the stitches, but nothing says I can't make a nice pattern instead - would give practice on working…"

"Claudia - Have you seen this photo from my website? It was made by Grace Lister, and was the basic idea that let me design my best piece. She took irregular shapes, outlined them, and then filled with various stitches. I added a little surface…"

Square backstitch

"Yes, likewise. This is a nice one. Ringed backstitch, while pretty, does not have that effect."

"What I like about this stitch is the alternation between small holes and large holes."

Palestrina knots

Finally got it, after studying Lorelei's diagram and looking at some unhelpful videos. The diagram was eventually what I learned it from. I don't know why diagrams are so hard for me. Also why can't the makers of the videos do it in slow motion? Here are the knots.…See More

Right now I'm working on learning pulled thread stitches and making a sampler which can be seen at my blog. I've done a lot of it on burlap and now I'm working on a loose-weave linen material.

Threads

I have used these threads for the pulled thread work most recently. Suggestions from others are welcome.

- Self thread. The linen is 54 inches wide so I cut off half a yard ot so and I'm cannibalizing threads from it.

Advantages: It's linen and not slick or stiff, it's the same size as the threads of the fabric, and it's strong except when it's not. I test every length before using it. You pretty well can't see the stitches when it's in place.

Disadvantages: It's slubby…
