Material: White cotton, DMC Cebelia No 20
Dimensions: 19 cm x 16 cm
Technique: Bobbin Lace in a Torchon style

"Winter" depicts my recollections of winter in Ontario. It starts with perfect, large snow flakes that you want to catch on your mitten and examine under a magnifying glass. As winter gains strength, the flakes fall more quickly, blur together and get whipped around by the wind. In the end, the strongest winter memory is the slanted, driving snow of a blizzard.

In the process of experimenting with a mathematical model for lace grounds, I encountered three grounds that are closely related and form an interesting transition. See insert.

The first ground is the familiar rose ground - in order to emphasize the points of the star in the pattern, it was worked using the stitches in #3026 of Uta Ulrich's Greunde mit System.

The second ground is a variation on the rose ground similar in style to the rose ground experiments described by Jo Edkins.

The third ground is geometric and follows a diagonal style. I have not encountered this last ground outside of my own experiments but given its simplicity, it is most likely a known ground.

To design "Winter Remembered", I created blocks of the same size that fit together in any order. I then wrote a computer program to place the blocks so that the rose ground would appear most near the top and gradually fade out to be slowly replaced by the second and then third ground. My goal was to give the appearance of a gradual transition from the large symmetrical stars of the rose ground to the slanted geometric shapes of the third ground. The computer program made use of a random number generator and a linear gradient.

In making the piece, I chose a relatively thick thread so that the details of the grounds would be easily visible from a distance. Because of the large scale, I favoured stitches
with plaits both to hold the threads in place and to give a strong visual presentation.

Thank you for the references.  I had seen the grounds in Cook and Stott but was not familiar with the DMC Torchon book.

I added a DISCUSSION here so I could post pdf files.  Links to both sets of ground are there.

There are 3 in the DMC book of torchon. Part 1 pages 35, 37 and 40

You can download that part.  There are more in Cook & Stott. I'm looking.

Thank you both for your comments.  The rose experiments by Jo Edkin's which I refer to in the description can be found here:  http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/lace/designer.htm#rose

Lorelei, if you come across the rose ground with diagonal strips of cloth stitch, I would appreciate it if you could send me the link or book reference.

What a clever design.

What an interesting piece. I'm glad to see a finished example for the use of your computer generated grounds. There is a version of rose ground that gives diagonal strips of cloth stitch or half stitch. It is not exactly like your 3rd ground, but similar. Thanks for posting this.
