Yes, it certainly changes the direction of the thread, which can be very effective when using colors.

Thanks for the explanation. It might also be described as cttc. That is a stitch used as a turning stitch in some tape laces.

I call this mosaic ground.  It's worked across in a straight line, braided down to the next row, and worked back.  The first row is:  Linen stitch, half stitch twist pin cross, linen stitch.  Second row:  Half stitch twist pin cross, linen stitch, half stitch twist pin cross.  If it's worked in a wide swatch with different colors, it comes out as a plaid, in narrower bands the colors zigzag , and with one color the square wholes become more obvious.  I use it in some patterns in my book Using Modern Grounds.

What an interesting ground. Did you just change direction at whim, or is there a consistent rule? I like the square effect.
