Yes, tension is a problem for me.  I work from a cookie pillow (without a stand) so I'm constantly adjusting the position.  I have someone building me a stand so perhaps then my tension will be better.

The problem appears to be mostly a question of tension, rather than threads going the wrong way. Getting all the threads going where they are supposed to go (which it appears you have done) is the major achievement. What I do for torchon is to work an entire diagonal line. As I set each pin I gently tug and wiggle the bobbins to remove all the slack, then close the pin.

Your 2nd attempt does look better, but there is still room for improvement. It is possible to learn bobbin lace on your own, but a teacher does make it easier. Hopefully, we here can all act as your teachers.

this is the first and second attempt at this bookmark. Still not happy with it. I wish I could send a better picture but my phone doesn't take good pics.
