Many early bobbin lace patterns have a decidedly modern look, like this pricking from Le Pompe 1. Thanks again to Tamara's guidance, I was able to make a third piece of lace from a period source. It certainly built my confidence up... I was just about ready to take on one of these period pieces solo.

That motif in the center, the major focus of this lace, is actually a way of crossing 3 braids.  So it looks to me as though Binche snowflakes (which is what these are) arose as a way of crossing 3 braids.
