Needle Lace

True needlelace is made only with needle and thread, on a temporary backing.

Go to http://needlelacetalk.ning.com  for 2 years' worth of discussion, and lots of photos.

Since needlelacetalk is also a ning network, you can use the same email address and password for NEEDLELACETALK that you use here on ioli.

NEEDLELACETALK

NEEDLELACETALK is a network I created on ning in February of 2010, for true needlelace.

http://needlelacetalk.ning.com

Needlelacetalk includes reticello, Pag, Turkish/Armenian oya, and puncetto, as well as traditional western European needle laces such as Alencon, point de gaze and gros point.

NEEDLELACETALK also has tutorials for beginners, and active groups for reticello and aemilia ars.

Margaret Ruhland, a member of needlelacetalk, has recently added a great many close up photos of antique needle laces in her collection.  Worth looking at:    http://needlelacetalk.ning.com/photo/album/listForOwner?screenName=10ruuhbhzdyhd

Each of her albums is a different piece.

I was looking on  ning.com it appears needlelacetalk is not the only site that is down. Still getting 500 unexpected error. I guess I will work on my tape lace until the site is up.

Hi Lynette, I keep getting an error 505 message. It's okay will give me time to organize my supplies for my adventure in Pag lace. This site and needlelacetalk site are both such treasures for a wealth of information. I am thankful they are availble.

Oh my, I'm very sad about that. I had plans on starting some Pag lace and following the tutorials on the site. Maybe with some luck the site will be up tomorrow. Thanks

Vicki

needlelacetalk does appear to be down. Let's try again in 6 hours or so. This does occasionally happen. We had a similar incident about a week ago. Usually they get it fixed in less than 12 hours.

That is a very good attempt for a first piece, Robert.  Well done. Your stitching is very nice and even.  Did you lay in at least 2 threads when working the cordonette (top stitching)?  this helps to smooth the edge, and the top stitching stitched cannot fall between the wraps on the outline thread, but have to sit nicely above it all!  This part is better worked from right to left - if you are a right hander. It seems very awkward to start with, but the reason is, that there is a very useful thumb on your left hand (hopefully, anyway!!) that can hold downs the laid in threads firmly, while you stitch over them!  worked  the 'normal' way, the needle thread seems to catch on the laid in threads, and it gets very annoying....!!!

Keep us informed of your progress, and ask as many questions as you like - we love to help new needle lacers, and get them as addicted as we are!!!!!!

Good job, Robert. You have achieved consistency in the sizes of your stitches. They all match. Very good for a first attempt. But there is room for improvement in your buttonhole stitches over the cordonnet/outline stitches.

The attached photo is an attempt at needle lace following Michael Dennis and his videos located on Needlelacetalk

I have a tendency to want to redo things as I learn more but if I did that, this would never been completed.  So it is a first attempt without ripping back.

It was fun!  I can tell where I need to wrap the thread better as I turn...some of it was very lumpy!  But with practice I hope to get better.

I would like to find a needle lace border to practice on but they seem hard to find.
