To compare with Beth's photos of antique Flanders and Binche that she posted today, this page from my website has laces from the 1700s. The images are thumbnails. Click on each to see the full size photo. Some of them have really good detail.

Beth - the NOTES explain how to post photos. There are different methods for different situations.  Look here:

I completely understand what you meant, so no worries.  Pat took very clear photos on her iPad.  I'll ask her to send some to me, and then I'll try to figure out how to post them.

Early Flanders and Binche -- I wish your eyeballs could post the images directly onto our site. Somebody has to invent telepathy, so we could all see what you saw. (I realize my statement is a bit bizarre. I love early Flanders/Mechlin and Binche, also.)

I have been collecting photos on my pinterest boards. This one is relevant:

My lace teacher, Pat Morris, Lee Daly (former IOLI president) and I went to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History last month right before Christmas to visit with Karen Thompson. We saw a few war lace pieces, but mainly did a behind the scenes tour of early Flanders and Binche lace, and it was completely amazing! We were even just inches away from a "pocket book" made by Martha Washington as a young girl! I really love American History and antiques, so that really made an enormous impression on me--

There is a very nice article "The delicate war laces of WWI" from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American history. It has some great photos as well. At http://americanhistory.si.edu/blog/delicate-war-laces-world-war-i

A very nice modern Binche -- lots of fancy grounds, very little clothwork. I don't know the source of the pattern.

There is a  Valenciennes book, the last one on our list, but I don't know anything about its contents.

Bernadette Carrez-Delord and Anne Banino VALENCIENNES.

Can anyone give some details?

I have just added links to my pinterest boards which cover this group of laces. The links are on the page Photos above.

Mary Niven's book on Flanders (Mary who is now Mary Woodthorpe) is available as a download from etsy. I have the paper book and it is quite good. Many original patterns, gracefully designed.
