For paintings of the garments worn at the time LePompe was published, see this. Look about 1/3 down the page.
Both the 2nd and 3rd and 5th are from LePompe, the oldest known pattern book, dating from the mid 16th century.
The bottom row is from BOBBIN LACE LESSON-CLOTH STRIP.
The Circle at right is another way to learn the basic stitches.

Elizabeth, thank you for your kind offer. Our guild meeting was unexpectedly cancelled this month. I will check with her in August and let you know.
Laurie, your Lace Guild member who is moving to Australia will be very welcome here! Do you know where she is going? This is a vast country, but there are lacemakers all over the place - and are Always very welcoming. If we know where she is going, we can organize for her to meet up with a group, so she settles in more easily, and does not feel so lonely in a new place!
That is one of the beauties of Lacemaking - Instant friends anywhere in the world (just about!) - and always a friendly welcome!
Jenny, you apparently already have used the Magic Thread method, just didn't know the name.
I think I am going to try what Lorelei does and see if that is a cleaner way to do the join (not having extra threads on the pillow which seem to want to get in the way).
Thank you, Jenny, for asking your questions and thank you, Lorelei and Elizabeth, for your answers.
One of our lace guild members is planning on getting married and moving to Australia. I will make sure she knows about the Gumnuts when she gets there. I've seen some of the postings online and enjoyed them.
OOh!!! - You are "That" Jenny!!! :) Don't be so quiet on the Nuts site - we need more chatter !!!!! :)
Christine Springett has some nice patterns, and they go from easy to a Lot more complex, but her instruction sheets that go with the patterns are very good. I found them good to buy from, and very helpful, too, if you have a query, problem, etc. later on with a pattern. Christine is very helpful.
Hi Liz, Yes I am a Gumnut too, though a very quiet one. I live in Sydney
The Gumnuts is an Aussie Lace site, - and we display some of our projects, etc. in the public domain. (I am a Gumnut - but the Chat section is for Aussie residents only ) There is some nice Eye Candy on the site, though - and some helpful hints, etc. I hope you enjoyed the visit, Jenny!
Thanks Lorelei, My join, when I get to it, will be done in the middle of the day when the light is best. I do have lamps of course, (and magnifiers!) but I mainly knit or do other stitching at night in front of TV. Currently working on a HUGE drawn & pulled sampler. Last night was playing with one of the open Schwalm fillings where only one in 3 threads is drawn. Soooooooo excited to see the finished effect! Why have I not played with Schwalm fillings before? they are gorgeous!
I do unpin my starts because I don't want to do any more pricking than I have to. So the lace beginning is unpinned. I just keep it and all the remaining finished parts flat. When I am ready to do the join I repin the beginning, but not all the beginning. I leave the very first row or 2 unpinned so I can work the crochet hook. I also save this operation for when I first get up, so I am full of energy and enthusiasm. (Not a late night activity.)
Morning Liz & Lorelei,
I just googled Christinine Springett and found her website. Will have to have a good look later when I have more time. Also just found a page on the Gumnuts pages too which looks very helpful.
I just checked out where I started, and the join will be on a line of plaits. There is a lot of plaits in this design so no other place to really join.
Just one more question for those of you who unpin your starts to move through larger pieces of lace, What to you do to protect the start? If it is no longer on your pillow, do you place it between something like two pieces of card or paper to keep it flat? Just curious, as mine is still sitting on the pricking, but is not anchored to the pillow. The pricking is half off the pillow, but will return to be fully on the pillow when I turn the next corner.
Everyone here is so helpful, I can't thank you all enough.
