There is such a paucity of bobbin lace teachers in my area too.  For that matter, even other lacers!  I traveled 3 hours to a teacher in Vermont one day.  She was awesome, but too far to go on a regular basis.  I am in New Hampshire.  If anyone knows of any teachers, groups, individuals.... I am desperate too!

Thanks!

I live in Wisconsin right out of Milwaukee.  I joined the IOLI and ask them to give me information on teachers. Well the only one close on the list has her phone disconnected. Tried a guild that was over a hour away, but having problems getting in touch.  Can anyone help me find a teacher in the Southeastern part of the State? If possible no longer than 1 hour and 45 minute drive. I really appreciate some help.  I am real frustrated!  Thank you,. Sandra

I have now added Jo's link to our MULTI-LINGUAL LACE TERMS page.

I've done a bit of checking the Dutch version of my website (Which is a bit out of date now...) Thank you for telling me about Gertrude Whiting's book - looks fascinating. I can see a problem where I'm not sure what the English terms mean, let alone the others! And I don't think I'll ever aim at a definitive guide. Still, it's something....

Jo, your website has been translated into at least a couple different languages online.  I don't know if you did this, or if other have, but you might be able to augment your glossary by looking at those sites.

Also, Gertrude Whiting's book A Lace Guide for Makers and Collectors (free download from Google books) has an explanations and nomenclature section that compares English, French, Italian, Spanish, and German terms.

There has been various comments about different words and phrases used for the same stitch. In my website, I am setting up a glossary

http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/lace/glossary.htm

It is NOT complete. I don't even guarantee accuracy! But I hope it is a start. It is a list of words, every one a link to part of my website, which for the stitches includes the normal C/T descriptions, and my animations. I'm also adding foreign terms as I learn them.

I'm telling IOLI, in case it helps anyone, and of course to invite more terms (with their definitions!) and also corrections to my (inevitable) errors.

Your site, Jo, is Excellent, - especially the diagrams, and the animated ones are marvellous. Very well done, and Thank you  for it.

I call it a scallop, because the ridges look like a scallop to me. I didn't learn that from anyone, but I read about a scallop in early Dutch lace (without an explanation) and immediately thought "I'll call this headside a scallop!" Previously I'd called it a twisted fan, but the workers' behaviour is quite different to a 'normal' fan, so I wanted a different word. By the way, see my page http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/lace/hescallop.htm for a photo, diagram, and animation (moving picture), plus description, of how to make this. This thread has already mentioned another page of mine. I cover quite a lot of Torchon plus a bit of Bucks Point. Plus some free patterns as well. All indexed here: http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/lace/index.htm

I know this edge as a Fish Tail Fan.

This is where Lacemaking is hard - we call the same feature by so many different names, - and it all gets confusing!!

It is Really good when you clever people can highlight with a coloured pen, the bits you are helping someone with.  Lorelei, your diagrams are always excellent, and Nancy , this one is Really good too.  I wish you had both had been around when I started learning!! - and this site, too!!! :)
