I had to wind 34 pairs of bobbins for my latest project, and I wanted to put 3m on each bobbin as it's a Torchon mat and I hope to avoid running out.  As a beginner, my heart quailed at the idea of all that winding.

Then I had a bit of a crazy idea, which turned out to work great:  I used my cordless electric drill!

It has clamp jaws that narrow by turning the barrel by hand, you don't need a key.  I cut a circle of thick felt, cupped that around the head of each bobbin, and gently tightened the chuck of the drill just enough to hold the bobbin without crushing it.

I set the drill to 'reverse' to mimic the direction I would normally wind by hand.  I started winding each bobbin by hand, then clamped it into the drill chuck as above. Then I could gently squeeze the trigger with my right hand, while feeding in the thread evenly with my left hand. My Ryobi drill comes on gently and was happy to wind at a slow speed to avoid damaging the bobbin or spangles.

It worked brilliantly!  I can't see any marks or damage on my wooden bobbins, the thread is wound much more evenly than I would have achieved by hand, and it was hugely quicker and easier.

I do have two bone bobbins which I didn't put into the drill for fear of breakage. Also I think it would be hard on the spangles to frequently subject them to such twirling, but they all held up fine this time.

That looks like a nice one Elizabeth.  Mine is somewhat similar to yours.  Small and handy.
