Selena

Do a search on Bart and Francis Egyptian cotton thread, and Brok Egyptian cotton thread.  They both sell those in very fine weights.  In the U.S. we can get them from Holly Van Sciver and other suppliers, but you would want somebody closer, I think.

Would anyone know what fineness the thread for bobbin lace can go up to, meaning I think i have seem 120/2 but does it go any finer, I did think i saw something written about 180 which would be super fine, if so i would love to know where this thread could be purchased.

WOW! What a wonderful supply of threads. Its nice to see there is a perle No3, i thought 8 was the thickest and have found i have to use a very fine thread for it to show up as a gimp.

As a wool spinner i understand about 2, 3 ply etc but all these years never realized this is what the second number meant as far as the perle and DCM threads. Also i never thought there was any more than 3 ply, i just thought the thread that had many ply's was a far better quality and more felted than plied.

I can see the DMC Floche being a wonderful thread for needle lace, but also some bobbin lace too, i think because bobbin lace was always done in cream or white we may tend to follow this just because it was so, but now with all these new threads out there is so much more choice, even though i am seeing more coloured lace these days. Maybe this too would be a 'group' to start.

Perle or pearl cotton refers to a particular way of plying the thread, and to the degree of twist on the thread.  Many manufacturers make perle threads.  Pearl is relatively loosely twisted and soft.  Every pearl I have seen is 2 threads twisted together = 2 ply.  When you see a size like 8/2 that means a size 8 thread plied 2 together.

As I understand it, most crochet threads are 6 threads plied together, but they can't be separated.  DMC makes very nice crochet cottons in sizes 10 to 100.  They also make very nice perle cottons in sizes 12 - 3.  But there are other manufacturers, too.

I just got a link to a new supplier (American) which has a really nice collection of threads.  She has DMC Floche in colors, which I really like for needle lace.

Does anyone known how many sizes of difference should there be betweena gimp thread and the chosen ground thread for any bobbin lace project, I know there will be many different scales, but i have heard of people saying they couldn't tell the difference very much between the gimp and the chosen thread for a particular pattern.

The project i am doing now i started of with DCM 50 then have gone to DCM 60 and still can't see the gimp at Perle No 8 very well, so now i am think of going to 100.

Now after reading your laceoil-threads beginners I am probably more enightened and way more confused, but i know it is because i have to study what you have written to get my head around it, thank you for supplying the information.

Is DCM and Perle the same threads, i tend to think Perle is for thicker threads and DCM is for finer threads.

Also when you have a number like DCM 60/2  knowing the 60 means the fineness but have no idea what the slash and other number is for, would anyone be able to answer this.
