Yay!  I'm glad it was helpful to you, Elizabeth.  It sure improved my chances of fixing a mistake without having to cut the threads by a wide percentage.  I think it's been one of the best pieces of advice I've ever been given, so I pass it on as often as I can to reduce other tatter's frustration with the same problem.  I'm a big proponent of "paying it forward".  You made my day. :)

Posting the shuttle before closing a ring certainly helps with opening it!!  I tried it last evening!!!!!!!!. Many thanks for all the answers to my initial query, and for those web site links. there is so much knowledge out there - it is just knowing where to tap into it..!!!!.

Karen got back to me really quickly.  Here's the most current link.  She's up to 176 tutorials!!!  She plans on reaching 200.  She is an amazing tatter who happens to be fluent in multiple languages - an invaluable resource in our community!  I'm a huge fan, of course.

muskaan has a lot of great tutorials: https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.in/p/my-tut.html  (as well as patterns!)

Jane Eborall is also a good resource for free patterns and tutorial pdfs: http://janeeborall.freeservers.com/

And of course Georgia Seitz has her online classes at BellaOnline

Then there is Craftree where you not only have free tutorials and patterns, but access to a large pool of experienced tatters who are willing to answer questions and find solutions:  https://www.craftree.com/site/index
