About distinctions between the regional-national versions of point ground laces:

OIDFA, POINT GROUND LACE, A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY, 2001

Ulrike Lohr  THE GRAMMAR OF POINT GROUND, which often shows the different techniques and what the outcome is within the point ground laces.  It explains the outcome of all variations by thread diagram, photos and patterns.  Ulrike's book explains how to wind several strands together for the gimp if you have not done that before.

POINT GROUND LACE   Livre publié avec l'aide des agences Européennes Socrates, laces of 5 countries, in 6 languages. 160 pages.   Might be considered a followup to the OIDFA booklet.

This next one is not a book, but another way to learn the whole series on your own

IOLI Point Ground Lace Proficiency Program.  General description of contents as of April 15, 2012 (there may be some deviations)--there are 4 Bucks patterns, 3 Tonder patterns, 1 Chantilly, 1 polychrome, and 1 blonde pattern in the Point Ground journal. The difficulty increases with each pattern within Bucks and Tonder. There are 2 different paths for Chantilly-blonde- polychrome; you may chose patterns by Ulrike Voelker or Lia Baumeister. I think all are samples with the exception of a Bucks hexagon. More than one national tradition - yes, English, Danish and French. The registration fee is $25.  If you submit a portfolio for assessment , the fee is $150.

Each pattern has a photo from the finished lace and a colored technical drawing to each pattern. that shows you all the difficulties inthis type of lace.  I think it is a nice book for self teaching .

Bucks Point

Bucks Point - learn

Geraldine Stott, VISUAL INTRODUCTION TO BUCKS POINT LACE, Batsford, London, 1985.  I think this is the best teaching book.  Good diagrams and explanations of the various elements.  Begins at the very beginning.

DVD:   Jean Leader    Intermediate Skills in Bucks Point Lace, 2009 Hensel Productions; about $80. Running time: 6.5 hours. You have to have some beginning Bucks skills already, like point ground, picots, and honeycomb.  Several projects.  Prickings and charts are included. Shows a variety of skills, first on a big diagram, then goes over them on the pillow.  You can see very clearly what she's doing. Worth the $$.   See Joan's comment of April 15, 2012 for full details of her review.

Jean Leader INTRODUCTION TO BUCKS POINT LACE. publ by The Lace Guild.

Alexandra Stillwell ALL ABOUT MAKING FLORAL BUCKS POINT LACE.2013 It has a series of patterns starting from the simple patterns leading up to more complex patterns. Jenny Brandis wrote a review on these on facebook "3 books on Point Ground lace by Karen Blum that were printed posthumously by her husband and daughter.
They are lovely books with clear photos, working diagrams and patterns that I would like to suggest you get from your local lace guild or buy direct from the Australian Lace Guild, South Australian Branch.
They cost me $20 Australian each at the OIDFA Congress so there would need to be a postage charge on top, but these books are worth adding to your library."

Joyce Symes FLORAL BUCKS POINT PATTERNS, (edited by Jean Leader), Available from http://www.jeanleader.co.uk/publications/floralbuckspoint.html  Beautiful designs, not particularly easy. For lacemakers with some experience in floral Bucks point.

Manie

The logo I chose for laceioli is a Tonder lace made by Doris Southard many years ago.  She allowed me to photo her laces back in the 1980s when she came to Chicago to give a workshop.  I don't know the precise source of the pattern.  I'll search through my patterns tomorrow to see if I have the pattern.

DVD: Intermediate Skills in Bucks Point Lace; Jean Leader; 2009 Hensel Productions; about $80. Running time: 6.5 hours. You have to have some beginning Bucks skills already, like point ground, picots, and honeycomb. The projects are a hankie edging w/corner, same edging with cucumber foot, bookmark in 2 lengths, hexagon, round medallion with butterfly & flowers, and a wide edging. Prickings and charts are included. Skills she shows you include: false picot, picot on both sides, cucumber footside, adding and removing bobbins for corner, finishing a bookmark without a tassel, cloth stitch diamond with holes, bundling pairs at the headside (of the hexagon), joining lace beginning to end, tallies in point ground (ugh!), mayflowers in honeycomb and pin chain. She offers a couple of options for starting with false picots, and a few of the skills are apparently of her own making, like her way of bundling. She shows the skills on a big diagram, then goes over them on the pillow. The production value is very good -- you can see very clearly what she's doing. I think it was worth the $$ for me, although I was confused in some places until I got one-on-one instruction from Susie Johnson, whose teaching method and logic seem to be closer to my way of thinking than Ms. Leader's in some cases. But this is a good video and I've learned a lot working through it.By the way, I notice it's available through the IOLI library but I can tell you that the 3 week borrowing time would not have been enough for me to get through this!! Once I'm done, I'll loan out my copy for longer!

The best book I have found for learning Tonder is "The Technique of Tonder Lace" by Inge Skovgaard.  It has a short history and a good explanation of the elements of the lace.  The patterns start out easy and work up to some beautiful, elaborate pieces.  Its also in English!  Unfortunately out of print, but available in the IOLI library.

For pattern books, Inge Skovgard's "Tonderkniplinger I" and "Tonderkniplinger II" are nice, but only in Danish and the diagrams are all in black and white.  "Tonder  Tyl", published by Knipling i Danmark has beautiful patterns, colored diagrams, and a pattern for a lace shawl, belt, and vest. "Femten Bredere: Tonderkniplinger", published by the Tonder Museum, has nice patterns with good diagrams (in color), but the prickings are all printed on red card stock, which makes them difficult to copy.

If you want to also design your own Tonder patterns, "Knipling 3" by Karen Trend Nissen has good instruction, nice patterns and excellent ideas for drawing out prickings and diagrams.  The book is in Danish but an English translation is also available.
