Doris Southard Lace Guild is pleased to announce that we will be co-hosting the 2015 IOLI Convention.  The headquarters hotel will be the Marriott Coralville Hotel & Convention Center just off of Interstate 80 in Coralville, Iowa.

PLEASE NOTE that the convention will be one day later in the week than usual.  The vendors and display will open Monday afternoon July 27 and the opening banquet will be Monday evening.  The closing banquet will be Saturday evening.  The convention will finish Sunday August 2.

We hope you will be able to join us for a week of lace.

I am very excited about the convention in Iowa. The location is near Iowa City which, being a university town,  is a very happening place, or so I have been told. Also, I have heard a lot about the Czech-Slovak Museum in nearby Cedar Rapids. Their Alphonse Mucha exhibit was supposed to be superb.

Could you explain how the schedule will work? For instance, what will be the class days?

We have to start a day later than usual because of a large event that is scheduled at the hotel annually.

For our initial planning with the hotel, we have been using the traditional schedule offset by one day. We assume that IOLI members want to keep the traditional 2 days of class, 1 day off, 2 days of class format. So the vendors and display would open Monday afternoon with the opening banquet Monday evening.  12 and 24 hour classes would meet Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday.  The closing banquet would be Saturday evening.  Thursday & Sunday would have short classes and tours.  This is all tentative.  We will be planning the convention this spring. We will be able to provide detailed information when we meet at the Convention in California this summer.

Yes, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids is a very special place.  Doris Southard Lace Guild demonstrates lacemaking there.  They have a wonderful collection of costumes embellished with  lace and embroidery.  There are several other ethnic museums in the region including the African American Museum of Iowa in Cedar Rapids, the German American Heritage Center in Davenport, the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, and the Belgian Museum of Quad Cities in Moline, Illinois.  Lacemakers meet monthly at the Belgian Museum.  The Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum & Library in West Branch has a very interesting collection of textiles from WWI.

For those interested in geology, there's the Devonian Fossil Gorge which was exposed by the 1993 flooding.
