Honiton

Honiton bobbin lace is a very fine and delicate part lace.  Motifs are shaped by adding and removing threads as needed. It was based in Devonshire.  The early 18th century version was named Bath Brussels by Santina Levey.

Sewings 2 Replies

Hello, all.  Does anyone know of a video tutorial on making sewings?  I've looked on YouTube and found nothing.  It's a pretty straightforward concept, I know, and I'm muddling through OK, but I'd…Continue

The collar sample from the Alban Lacemakers is a phenomenal piece of Art Nouveau design.  Right down to the dragonflies and the shapes of the stems.  I love it.

This site has 2 spectacular Honiton pieces, as well as others in various styles of bobbin lace.  Worth looking at!

If anyone has information about Emma Radford, of Sidmouth who designed some pieces of Honiton lace, ie. the spider piece at Allhallows, I need it urgently. I have already been in contact with Allhallows, but they do not have very much information about her.

Devon, that is an amazing piece.  And, at last, we have good photography.  One odd thing, on the leaf with taps (at least some of them) the lacemaker used rolls instead of ribs.  The rib is only used for the central long vein, not the side veins.  Some of the motifs look just like similar flowers in Elsie Luxton's book.  She must have been looking at similar pieces when she drew her patterns (or the unknown designer who made her originals).

Where is the button where we give the museum feedback and tell them they finally got it right be giving us photos that show how the piece was made.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has recently done some great photography of just a few pieces of lace and I would like to share the link with a Honiton Handkerchief. Generally speaking, when you see a series of photos on the  Metropolitan Museum website, the ones that appear lighter have a higher resolution and you can zoom and zoom and zoom on them. If you go to this piece, and click on the entry, then go to the final photo of the series, which is even more of a close up than the others and zoom, you will be able to see every thread! Some of the others that are the full piece are also very detailed, and I think one even shows the back.
