DUCHESSE

TECHNIQUE

Jane Newble-de Graaf DUCHESSE LACE, AN INTRODUCTION. Batsford, 1989.  English.  Quite good to learn from.  Lots of diagrams, some simple learning patterns for all the specific common techniques, some nice designs, traditional but with a modern feel.

R. Delescen-van Rijsewijk DUCHESSE-KANT, KANT VOOR HERTOGINNEN, Terra Zutphen 1987.  In Dutch, but there are enough diagrams explaining the hard parts to make it usable.  Nice patterns.

Anneke Reijs has written a series of self published manuals on the technique of Duchesse lace, and Withof, in English, with many patterns.  MANUAL FOR SLUIS AND WITHOF DUCHESSE LACES, PART I, SLUIS 1913-1935.  1994. This 1st volume is pure Duchesse, clear, lots of diagrams.   Volumes II and III are Withof technique See her website:  http://www.reijs.nl/hoofdpagina%20Engels.html

DUCHESSE PATTERNS

Louisa A. Tebbs THE ART OF BOBBIN LACE, 1907. and SUPPLEMENT TO THE ART OF BOBBIN LACE, 1911.  Verbal descriptions of how to make the lace, but certainly not to learn from.  Interesting patterns for styles she calls "Guipure de Flandre", "Old Flemish", "Point de Flandre", "Milanese", "Venetian".  The Milanese is recognizable.  There are some patterns in the Honiton style and Duchesse style.  These are available online as free downloads from      http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books.html

Ana Isasi Blanco BRUSSELS LACEMAKING. self published, 1985.  In English.  Mostly verbal descriptions of what to do.  Very few diagrams.  Some nice patterns.

L. W. van der Meulen-Nulle HANDLEIDING TOT HET VERVAARDIGEN VAN DUCHESSE KANT  1983 in Dutch.  A famous book, but the diagrams aren't quite enough to help a non-Dutch speaker. I don't know if this was ever translated into English.

Sister Judith self published several sets of patterns, called DUCHESSE PATRONEN.  The 1st volume and pure Duchesse.  Sucessive volumes move more and more into Withof style.  There is no explanation or instructions, but the patterns are beautiful.

Jose van Pamelen-Hagenaars DUCHESSE, 20 KANTKLOSPATRONEN. 1983.  In Dutch, but the diagrams are clear enough and detailed enough that you can follow what to do.  Nice patterns.  Most stay to the traditional style, while being easier and less fussy than traditional.  A few are very modern designs.

ROSALINE

TECHNIQUE

Rosaline Spitze-Technik  publ by Deutscher-Kloeppelverband. diagrams and photos. See comment below with link to DKV page for this book.

Rosaline Perle by Judith Cordell (2011, ISBN-13: 978-0957069800); Good introduction to Rosaline perle techniques, does not cover history. Pages 1-39 covers how to do each type of motif with written description and photos of each step, how to make perles, fillings, and how to roll from one motif to another. Pages 40-64 have simple patterns along with photo of finished lace and working hints, but not specific instructions or thread diagrams. Recommended. in English   Available from Holly van Sciver

The Technique of Rosaline by Vera Cockuyt;  I have seen the Techniques book but do not own it. It is typical of her other books, typed descriptions of techniques accompanied by drawn diagrams, no photos. Very helpful suggestions and insights on working the lace. Self-published about 1989. English. I have not seen the Patterns book.    Available from Holly van Sciver

The Technique of Rosaline/Patterns by Vera Cockuyt.   Available from Holly van Sciver

Rosaline Perlée by Jan Geelen; ISBN 906255413X, 1990, out of print, Dutch. 63 pages. Working diagrams of motifs, some photos, progressive lessons, pattern sheet.

Rosaline Lace by Ghislaine Eemans-Moors; ISBN 0713476036, 1996 or 1997, out of print, English, Dutch, French, and German. 126 pages. First 61 pages are English, covering history of Rosaline lace in Aalst, East Flanders (Belgium); techniques with step-by-step text, diagrams, and photos for making a three-leaflet motif; patterns and diagrams for other basic motifs; directions for making perles; variety of more complex patterns. Remaining parts of the book repeat the essentials in the other languages.

Chieko Miyawaki THE TECHNIQUE OF ROSALINE  all Japanese, some working diagrams, many step-by-step photos, lots of text (that I could not read), no ISBN (that I could read). Very pretty book. The book included a contact email address: bobbin-lace.chi@jcom.home.ne.jp, which I have not tried.

"Susan Hottle's review: of The Technique of Rosaline Lace by Chieko Miyawaki ...  It is written in Japanese but there is a CD included that has a 26 page English translation as a pdf.  ..The translator is not a lacemaker, the translation so far has proved to be adequate.  There are lots of good diagrams & many elegant patterns. ...Note that there are some differences in technique compared to Judith Cordell, Geelen & Moors.  I felt the instructions & diagrams for the "multiple fish" motif were helpful when I re-worked the Cordell leaf spray. A fellow student in the Rosaline class taught by Maria Provencher at the 2013 IOLI convention had the Miyawaki book. My notes about it include: all Japanese, some working diagrams, many step-by-step photos, lots of text (that I could not read), no ISBN (that I could read). Very pretty book. The book included a contact email address: bobbin-lace.chi@jcom.home.ne.jp, which I have not tried.

Thanks Carolyn. I have added them to the list above. Can you tell us a little about the contents? How many patterns? Arranged in order of difficulty? Are photographs close up enough? Good diagrams? Any details you can add would be useful for someone buying books sight unseen.

Just today I learned of the Miyawaki Rosaline book.  Has anyone seen it?  Describe its contents?

Comment by Lorelei Halley Administrator on August 17, 2012 at 4:51pm

The books I've added are ones I have, but all are rather old, and I'm not sure which ones are still in print.  I don't have any more recent ones.  Please, please if you know of any more recent books on duchesse, please post a comment with the details, including a description of its strong points.
