For those who love hand made lace.
For those interested in designing and making contemporary and modern bobbin lace designs which don't fit into traditional categories. Many of these will be pictorial or realistic representations, but some will be abstract.

"Lace Beyond the Pattern"
Embark on a journey of one lacemaker's quest for contemporary lace and lace design. Dagmar Beckel-Machyckova grew up in Czechoslovakia, the cradle of contemporary bobbin lace, and currently resides in the United States. In her talk, she will discuss the traditional lace schooling in former Czechoslovakia as well as comparisons between the US and European ways of teaching. Her unique philosophy of using lace stitches as a toolbox of lace design breaks down the boundaries of traditional laces and has inspired dozens of students to create their own works of art. We'll peel back the curtain on the design process and walk through some of her most inspiring pieces.
DAGMAR BECKEL - MACHYCKOVA
Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Dagmar encountered bobbin lace as a nine-year-old girl. Fascinated by this fiber technique, she pursued it through schooling throughout Europe and later graduated from the Institute of Art Manufacturing in Prague, Czech Republic with a degree in lacemaking. In 2000 she won the 2nd place in a Young Lacemaker’s Design Competition in the Czech Republic.
She moved to the United States in 2001 to pursue her Master’s Degree in Minnesota. After completing her studies and starting a family, she returned to her love of bobbin lace. Since 2001 she has been writing professional articles for US and European lace magazines. Beginning at the national lacemaking convention organized by the International Organization of Lace, Inc (IOLI) in St.Paul, MN in 2012, Dagmar has been a sought after teacher across the United States.
In 2016, her work was selected for the Doily Free Zone in Italy, a unique convention, highlighting the best lacemaking artists under 40 in the world.
In 2017, her piece “What I want” was chosen for the Eau Claire juried arts exhibition called Arts West 38. Her work is also featured in the 53rd Annual Spring Show 2017 in Chippewa Falls.
In 2018, her work “Mourning Mega”, an innovative piece of traditional bobbin lace made out of strips of plastic and enlarged 20 fold was selected for the Inaugural Confluence of Art Juried Exhibition at the Pablo Arts Center in Eau Claire, WI.
In 2018, her work “Habitats of Hypocrisy” was selected for "Lace, not Lace, Contemporary Fiber Art from Lacemaking Techniques” a contemporary lace exhibition in Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ. Her work is one of only 26 artists from around the globe to be on display carefully selected by the internationally known lace expert Devon Thein.
In 2019, her work "Talking to a Wall" was featured on the cover of the IOLI magazine.
During the winter of 2019-2020, her work was exhibited as part of the "On Wisconsin Fiber Arts Biennial"
Dagmar's love of lace has led her to share her knowledge with kids as well as local communities. She is a life-long learner and continues to explore the endless possibilities of contemporary lace.
