For those who love hand made lace.
Some very good beginning Bedfordshire bobbin lace books are
Margaret Hamer wrote several little pamphlets, the 1st two are Bedfordshire: PILLOW LACE, BOOK I, 1975 and PILLOW LACE BOOK II, 1977. I found these actually very helpful and worked through all the patterns in the series.
Barbara Underwood INTRODUCING TRADITIONAL BEDFORDSHIRE LACE IN 20 LESSONS. She starts with the basics, but continues into floral Bedfordshire. I think this is the best for learning floral Beds.
Pam Robinson A MANUAL OF BEDFORDSHIRE LACE. She uses what we would call Cluny technique in several of her pieces.
Pam Nottingham COMPLETE BOOK OF ENGLISH BOBBIN LACE, Van Nostrand Reinhold, NY, 1976. Has chapter on torchon, Beds and Bucks. The Beds chapter is quite good for beginners.
I haven't seen this one, but have heard it recommended:
An Introduction to Bedfordshire Lace by Jean Leader
56 pp, A5 size, Price: £5.00 plus postage. ISBN 1 901372 16 2
Published by and available from The Lace Guild. All profits from the sale of this book go to The Lace Guild. Sample pages in pdf format can be downloaded here. See her website.
Good books with patterns, once you have learned the basics:
Louise West BEDFORDSHIRE LACE DESIGNS, 2017. (now available for sale, £19.95 plus postage, from either Roseground, Makit or direct from Louise West)
Barbara Underwood TRADITIONAL BEDFORDSHIRE LACE, TECHNIQUE AND PATTERNS, Ruth Bean, 1988. There is some instructional material but her more recent book is better for lessons.
Margaret Turner BEDFORDSHIRE LACE PATTERS, A PERSONAL SELECTION, Ruth Bean 1986
Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof FLORAL BEDFORDSHIRE, Barbara Fay Verlag 2007, Her original designs in the style of traditional Beds, many beautiful small patterns and motifs.
Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof, NATURE IN LACE, FLORAL BEDFORDSHIRE PATTERNS, 2008. More beautiful small designs.
These are the ones I have. If you have other recommendations, please leave comments about good books and patterns in a comment box below.
