I have done some research on the war laces produced in Belgium during WWI.  I wrote up a blog post (essay, really; I love writing essays!) on the subject, with a brief and narrow history of WWI as it related to Belgium, the same for Herbert Hoover, and the administration of the Committee for the Relief of Belgium.  Toward the end, there are various links to sites with pictures of the lace itself.

My essay, Belgium in WWI: Flour Sacks and Lace, if you want to read the essay.

Or if you just want pictures, the following are the sites I found.  The Smithsonian-hosted sites are the best, because you can click on the lace pictures and zoom up really close to see construction details.  The lace is generally a mix of bobbin lace, needlelace, and whitework embroidery:

Allied Nations Tablecloth
Three examples of the American eagle and other US symbols in bobbin...
The Delicate "War Laces" of World War I
Women in World War I - Belgian War Lace  (Scroll to the bottom and click through the collection!  So lovely!)
Whitework, eyelet lace (broderie Anglais), and needlelace insertions

I hope you find this history as fascinating as I do, and I'm sure you'll appreciate the lace pictures!

This is interesting. It will take me a few days to review everything you have presented to us. There was some discussion of the War Lace on arachne at some point in the last year or so.

Very readable essay and a great invitation and starting point to browse and learn more. Thank you.

A complicated story very well told. I especially enjoyed reading about the machinations necessary to get the food aid into Belgium. And also learning about the main characters' lives after the war. Thank you for doing it, and telling us about it.
